Digi-NewB A new generation monitoring system in neonatology

abstract

Each year in Europe, more than 300000 babies are born prematurely. They are more exposed than others to the risk of sepsis, or infection.

What? Digi-NewB was an EU-funded project aiming to improve care for the newborns thanks to the development of a new generation monitoring system that was implemented between March 2016 and May 2020. The project had a particular focus on sepsis risk and maturation of premature newborns.

Who? The project gathered 7 partners from 4 countries (France, Ireland, Finland, Portugal). It was led by the Western Network of University Hospitals in France (GCS HUGO), and built on the collaboration with universities (Rennes 1 France, University of Galway Ireland, INESC TEC Portugal, TUNI Finland) and SMEs (Syncrophi in Ireland and Voxygen in France). The clinical study was implemented in 6 University hospitals neonatology services, gathered into the western pediatric research network  HUGOPEREN (Rennes, Angers, Nantes, Brest, Poitiers, et Tours).

How? Our main focus was the development of a Decision Support System that aims to assist the clinician in decision-making processes. The system was developed to be a non-invasive monitoring system that early detects sepsis and quantifies newborns' cardio-respiratory and neurobehavioral maturation. The system was developped on a large d ...

objectives

The main objective was to improve care for the newborns in neonatal units by reducing mortality, morbidity and health costs. Sub-objectives included:

  • The implementation of a large clinical study that consisted in monitoring more than 700 newborns in 6 different hospitals (Rennes, Angers, Nantes, Brest, Poitiers, Tours)
  • The identification of relevant parameters and development of composite indices to be displayed on a dedicated interface in neonatology units
  • The improvement and validation of the Decision support system with regards to diagnosis relevance and to user experience, especially in complex situations

The proposed new class of monitoring is expected to lead to development of novel preventive and therapeutic strategies to counteract late diagnosis of sepsis and inappropriate evaluation of maturity.
